Shopping for a first pony for my 9-year-old and I'm learning as I go.

Beyond age, height and "kid safe", what questions do you always ask a seller? And is a full pre-purchase exam worth it on a lower-priced pony, or is a basic vet check enough?

Worth doing a vet check on any horse or pony, whatever the price. Talk it through with your own vet: they can tell you which parts matter most for a first pony's job.

Always ask why they are selling, and whether the pony has been ridden by kids around your daughter's level recently, not just years ago.

Ask to see the pony caught in the field, tacked up, clipped, loaded on a trailer and picked out, all by someone the pony does not know. Those are the everyday jobs a kid will actually do.

That is such a good list. Writing all of these down.
